Fire Flower

Transparent Watercolor on Arches paper

It’s so cold here that I decided I needed some red flowers and hot colors.  I’m feeling much better now, even if George the gopher tortoise has gone into his burrow for the winter.  This is something to hang on your wall and dream of warmer times.  I hope you are all having a lovely holiday season, my friends.  Thank you so very much for looking at my artwork.

Best,

The First Heart

Heart One

Heart One

Transparent Watercolor and Watercolor stick on Arches paper

This is the first of the tiny hearts.  It’s about 1.5 X 2.5 inches.  After attending a design lecture and being told that I should avoid ‘banal’ symbols like hearts and stars and flags, I went to my bookshelf and pulled out a folio on the works of Jim Dine and Jasper Johns.  Their hearts and flags are so deep, physically and metaphorically many layered.  So complex that much of it cannot be seen in reproduction.  Symbols are what you make them.  You can read on the surface only and dismiss archetypes that are deep in our cultural psyche, or you can make it layer upon layer and read or create story after story in a single image.  How deep do you look?

Thank you for visiting my blog.  Best always,

Marie Angeli

The Bower

Transparent Watercolor on Arches paper

Another tiny watercolor.  The door to the bower hides behind the flowers, an entrance to a space to dream and a place of private serenity.  You can just see the edge of the wall in blue shadow, and the red glow within thru the doorway itself.  Let it help renew your energies in this season of frantic and frenetic activity.  Thank you for looking at my work.

It’s star season

CASTOR AND POLLUX

Twin stars

Transparent watercolor and pencil on arches paper

It’s star season!  With the solstice approaching, and all the other holidays, I just had to do a quickie to celebrate.  I’ve promised myself some twinkly lights and greenery this year, and I hoping not to procrastinate too long before getting done with the seasonal gifts.   I’m also trying to remind myself to regularly focus on the rebirth of Light.  This year has brought some real challenges to our lives, our culture, our world.  My own small community is facing the loss of several older friends who are our stars.  But the year cycles, the world goes on, the light dies and is reborn, and the stars that have been our friends and inspirations are left twinkling in the sky.

Have some twinkle of your own.  Thanks for looking at the work.

Morning Onions

Transparent Watercolor on arches paper

These little beauties were waiting for me one morning.  I knew I had to cut them up.  Really I did.  I decided to procrastinate and paint them instead.  I tried to capture the early morning light, like a bright yellow spotlight.  This is a smaller work, about 5 X 7 inches.  Thank you for looking!

Rosehips

ROSEHIPS

Rosehips

Transparent Watercolor and Pen on paper

Small painting and a small species rose.  Rosehips are a very good source of vitamin C, and mixed with Chamomile, make a really good tea.  Good for colds and flu, too.  We’ve finally drifted down into cold temps here, and it made me think of rose hips, and thus this little painting.  Enjoy.

Thank you for looking at the work.  Best,

Morning Oranges

Transparent Watercolor on Arches paper

It’s that time of year in my neighborhood.  The satsumas are coming in.  We’ve had our first freeze, so they are as sweet as honey.  The juice runs all over when you peel them and pop the sections in your mouth, but there’s nothing like a home grown orange.  Especially if the night before was a bit rough…

Thank you for looking at the work.

All my best,

Marie Angeli

Year Turn

Transparent Watercolor on Arches paper

This small painting was inspired by the area around Buena Vista, CO, up past Florissant and over the pass.  They have a really incredible series of hot springs up there, and we have gone to soak in the dead of winter for years.  Assuming that you can get over the mountain roads covered in snow, that is!  Sitting in the hot steamy water with snow a few inches from your nose is amazing.  And if you look up, you can see the snow blowing off the mountaintops in great plumes.  The nearest peaks are in the 14,000 foot category, and you can hear them in the silence, thinking their slow granite thoughts.  Fanciful?  Maybe, but don’t judge till you’ve been there yourself.  Some places are still quite magical.

Thanks for looking at my work!

Tiny Heart III

Tiny Heart III

Tiny Heart III

Transparent Watercolor on Arches paper

I think that this is the tiniest of the tiny hearts I’ve painted.  It’s all of 1 X 1 and 1/2 inches small.  And yet I think it manages to say quite a bit in that limited space.  When I painted this I was feeling on the verge of a major transformation.  I’d slogged along for awhile, as we creatives often do, not really feeling directed.  But all of a sudden, a series of inspirations came to me, sometimes artistic, and sometimes spiritual.  I felt myself almost literally catch fire with the inner flame of enthusiasm.  I look at this tiny piece and I can see the flames at the very bottom, the blue flame of the gas jet trying to catch.  On the left and the top of the heart, I can see the first flickerings of the ‘Aha!’ moment.  And all of a sudden, the thing just bursts out in full combustion.  “I’ll do it!”  I love this little piece and the original has traveled across the water to a collection in the British Isles.  Quite the ambassador!  Thank you for looking at my work, as always, my friends.

Be well,

Marie Angeli

Cottage Garden

Cottage Garden

Tiny watercolor on Arches paper

Just another mini (about 2 X 3 inches).  I love these little ones.  They can give a quick burst of color and a moment in a garden.  I try to have several around me on my table, and in a corner of a wall.  They are small and seem pretty simple, but they often draw the eye and make you look closely to see what else is there.  This one used traditional transparent watercolor, which means no white paint and lots of transparent glazes, and water media color pencil.  I hope you enjoy looking at this as much as I enjoyed painting it!

Blest,

Marie Angeli
